You Can be a Homeowner!
Decent, stable, energy-efficient and affordable housing is critical to education, health, and economic success across our area. Cowlitz County Habitat’s unique homeownership program allows hardworking low-income families (in the 30%-65% AMI) to build and buy a home with a 0% interest mortgage after completing 500 sweat equity hours. *There are occasional opportunities to partner with other organizations to offer a low-interest mortgage and/or participate in our rehab programs. We invite you to attend our homeowner application meetings to learn about the various opportunities.
Please call our Habitat office at 360-425-6177 to be placed on our call-back/invitation listing for our next meeting.
Homeownership Program
Habitat for Humanity provides a unique opportunity for hardworking families to build and buy their own homes. Our homes are sold at no profit to our homeowner families, with a minimal down payment and a 0% interest* mortgage. The mortgage lengths vary depending on the family income. Habitat adjusts the length of the mortgage so that the monthly mortgage payment (which includes taxes, insurance, and HOA fees, if applicable) is no more than 30% of the homeowner’s gross monthly income. Habitat for Humanity homeowner mortgage payments are put into a fund that helps pay for construction of future homes in the Cowlitz County community.
The selection of families who will purchase new or rehab homes from Cowlitz County Habitat for Humanity will be done by the Family Selection team in a way that does not discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or national origin or because all or part of the applicant’s income is derived from public assistance programs. The key to success: willing to partner and participate as the program outlines. YOU must have a desire and ability to meet the requirements of the program and communicate regularly with the Family Selection team and the Habitat office. This is a "Hands-Up" program - not a "hands-out" and we look forward to supporting you and working with you.
"Sweat Equity":
Homeowners for new home construction are required to perform a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer work known as “sweat equity” within the Habitat organization before moving into their home (40 hours per month). Sweat equity is an exciting learning experience in which you work with family, neighbors, and friends to build other homeowners’ homes as well as your own. Working alongside volunteers and future neighbors to build your home and community is one of the most rewarding aspects of Habitat for Humanity. In addition to working on the construction site, there are many ways to complete sweat equity hours such as: Working at the Cowlitz County Habitat main Office, Habitat for Humanity Store; helping with homeowner outreach, special events and attending classes on home maintenance and financial fitness.
Homeownership Information: Call us for the current Open Enrollment Flyer and Family Selection Criteria for qualification and criteria as well as current income levels & items needed to apply.
