FEBRUARY 2012 – SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

We LOVE our CCHFH Volunteers!

THANK YOU CCHFH volunteers and donors for all your support! In honor of Valentine’s Day, we wanted to say THANK YOU and let you know how much we appreciate you and what an integral part of our Habitat family you are. You are making a tremendous difference in our community and in the lives of the families we reach. CCHFH is growing and serving more families in our community. We are able to do that because of YOU! Thank you to those that serve at our Habitat STORE, Habitat OFFICE, on the various TEAMS and COMMITTEES, our BOARD of Directors, Donors and all those that support “the behind the scene” to make it happen! You are the heartbeat of Habitat. We are honored by you and THANK YOU!

ANNUAL TRADEMARK BREAKFAST – Save the Date and Help More Families!

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us in our BUILDING HOPE, BUILDING COMMUNITIES 2012 Annual Breakfast Fundraiser. We will hold this year’s event on WEDNESDAY, March 28th, 2012 at the Cowlitz County Expo Center. The program will begin at 7:30 a.m. for approximately 1 hour. Doors will open by 7:00 for table check in and the buffet breakfast will begin service by 7:15.

We are excited to announce our keynote speaker… Dan Austin. Co-Founder and Executive Director of 88bikes – an international organization that selects places where 88bikes can have the most powerful impact, and likelihood for success; where the bikes can be reasonably accommodated, safely stored and kept in good repair; and where there is strong leadership in the school or orphanage receptive to the project and in making a difference in the lives of the children and community they serve. Dan has spoken across the globe and has also been interviewed on the CBS Evening News. You won’t want to miss this opportunity!

PLEASE – call the OFFICE at 360-425-6177 to reserve an invitation OR to sign up and serve (along with our Board and Staff) as a TABLE CAPTAIN. An Exciting Update from our Executive Director:
PUBLIC MEETING – THURSDAY, MARCH 8th AT PUD AUDITORIUM – 6:00 PM
VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION AND A BRUSH WITH KINDNESS OUTREACH

You are invited to attend the THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2012 Habitat Volunteer Orientation and our new program announcement public meeting. This will begin at 6:00 pm at the PUD Auditorium, located at 961 12th Avenue in Longview.

We will discuss the various team and volunteer needs we have within the organization. Please plan on attending! There is something for everyone and your interest and skills in a variety of areas will find a home with us – from working on a construction site, to working in our Habitat Store or Office; helping with our outreach programs; public relations, marketing; aluminum can/recycling efforts; working on our various committees and countless other areas – WE NEED YOU! And bring a friend!

We will also be discussing a portion of our new Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) program, known as “A Brush with Kindness”. We will explain the program parameters and provide applications to those families interested in applying for exterior home assistance.

The Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) is a national movement to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods through local community partnerships and the expansion of housing services. Habitat has realized that providing safe, decent, affordable housing means more than building new houses. Existing housing stock needs care and preservation to ensure the availability of safe and healthy shelter for all county residents. Therefore, NRI will focus on a partnership model to repair and preserve single family, owner-occupied housing for low-income households.

Cowlitz County Habitat for Humanity’s pilot program, known as “A Brush with Kindness (ABwK)” will serve our community specifically with projects such as:

Our ABwK pilot program follows the same model and philosophy as our new home construction projects and overall mission. Habitat for Humanity’s programs is a HAND-UP NOT a HAND-OUT. Therefore, the families must meet certain requirements, such as:

Please plan on attending the March 8th meeting to learn more about the program. You may also call the office at 360-425-6177 to be placed on the application request listing and to reserve your seat at this upcoming meeting.

We are excited to offer this opportunity to our community. If you would like to volunteer to assist with this program; become a project sponsor; become a collaborative partner; sign-up for home repair or simply to refer someone, we look forward to speaking to you!

HOUSE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:
House 16 is well underway in Longview. The siding is up and the five bedroom house for the Felix family is moving along beautifully. Maria is grateful to Mike Mask, Site Supervisor for his leadership and support and for all the volunteers who so generously come out and work along side her to build this dream come true. If you are interested in volunteering on this site – please call the office at 360-425-6177 for a schedule update.

We are grateful for the support of the City of Longview and the HOME Consortium for the use of HOME funds to purchase this property and to assist with some infrastructure costs. Thank you also to Rich Black, Cowlitz Electric who has so generously donated his expertise, time and labor in the last several homes. THANKS, RICH! You’re an amazing, gifted and generous volunteer.

Typically, we work every Saturday (as long as there is no holiday tied in with the weekend) from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. You must be 18 and over to work on site. We do have projects for minors (under 18 with parent authorization) and again, contact Savannah, our Volunteer Coordinator to learn about these additional opportunities.

House 17 – Kelso.
CCHFH is very grateful to the City of Kelso for the recent gift of NSP property donated to Habitat to build a single family residence. Special thanks to the City Mayor and Council members, their City Attorney and Community Development Manager for their efforts in the acquisition of this property. The Rodriguez Family is anxiously awaiting the site of our excavation crew – and for the upcoming GROUND BREAKING – all signs of starting their new home!

Please join in early March for the House 17 GROUND BREAKING. Final date and time will be forwarded. Please watch for updates on this most exciting event.

SPECIAL THANKS to PNE Charitable Foundation for their continued house sponsorship support through their annual charity golf tournament. They have named Cowlitz County Habitat for Humanity their beneficiary and have been extremely instrumental in the financial support of our last five homes and this new house 17 that we will soon break ground on. THANK YOU PNE Charitable Foundation and all those that support this tournament for your generosity and support! YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE and CCHFH and our community are grateful for your outstanding contributions!

Additional Habitat Volunteer Needs
Greetings Habitat friends and volunteers! Spring is approaching and hopefully the warm weather, too.
We have many volunteer positions available and can use your assistance.

Again, please join us on March 8th at 6:00 pm for the Volunteer Orientation to learn about the ongoing volunteer opportunities CCHFH provides (such as committees, construction site volunteers, public speaking). Additionally, we have some urgent requests and if you are interested in any of the following, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 360-425-6177 as soon as possible:

1. The Habitat Store is growing and busier than ever. The Store is looking for volunteers on a consistent basis. Would you consider 2 to 4 hours per month by working at the Store with warehouse support; driver assistance in picking up donations; cleaning and moving donations out on the Store floor; and so many other Store opportunities. The Habitat Store is located at 1145 11th in Longview (the old “feed store” next to Bob’s Administrative Offices). The Store is opened Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please SHOP, DONATE and VOLUNTEER! Call our Store Manager, Judy at 360-636-6765 or our Volunteer Coordinator, Savannah at 360-425-6177 to arrange volunteer schedules at the Store. It’s great fun and supports our mission of serving families! CALL NOW – We need you!

2. Aluminum Can Recycling Efforts – Outside Can Pick Up Coordinator Needed: Many of you may know Carol Ledbetter, our long-term office volunteer extraordinaire and aluminum can coordinator. She has been graciously donating her time to pick up both exterior and interior can boxes as a fundraising opportunity for Habitat for several years. However, she is eager to hand over the reigns for the EXTERIOR CAN PICK-UP’s. This would be a minimal commitment of twice monthly pick ups or whenever would be most convenient to your schedule. Carol does an excellent job but is “retiring” from this portion of her duties. Please consider helping us with this fundraising effort. Please call Carol at the Habitat office on MONDAY (between 10 and 2) at 360-425-6177 to discuss the route and potential support~ THANK YOU!

3. Construction Sites and ABwK – Since we will soon have two homes under construction we are looking for groups and individuals that will support the SATURDAY construction site builds. We will occasionally have a Friday and/or midweek build day. If you are interested in working on the site, please join us at the March 8th Volunteer Orientation or contact the office at 360-425-6177 or email volunteer@cowlitzhabitat.org to let us know of your interest and availability.

We are also looking for LUNCH PROVIDERS for our SATURDAY BUILD SITE locations. Typically, we have 10 to 15 per site and will have several dates and locations to fill. If you and/or your organization are interested in supporting this effort, please give us a call or shoot an email at volunteer@cowlitzhabitat.org .

Please visit our website at www.cowlitzhabitat.org to learn more about our standing committees’ schedules and opportunities and to download volunteer waivers and other important information.

THANK YOU!
